“Bernie Girl”

Bernice M. Valerio, of Ranchos de Taos, passed away in the comfort of her home on September 3, 2026. Bernie Girl was born on May 20, 1950, in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, her grandmother Guadalupe Tafoya who was a midwife delivered her.

She is preceded in death by her parents Carolina Cortez and Eliseo Miera; Her in-laws Candido and Anna C. Valerio; Sister Carla Graham, brothers, Daniel Cortez (Cecelia), Tony Tafoya and Santiago “Jimmy” Miera; Nephews Ronnie Tafoya and Jeffrey Jeantette; Brothers-in-Law Tim Mylet and Peter Jeantette.

Bernie Girl is survived by her husband of 47 years Ruben Armando Valerio; daughters Amanda V. Dussault (Darrel) and Sarah Anita Valerio, the Apple of her Eye her grandson Evan A. Dussault; Her Compadres Cliff and Mary Brewer; Sister in-law Luisa Valerio-Mylet and Brother in-law Ruben Graham; Sister Cindy Jeantette and Brothers Ramon Cortez (Maryann), Joe Miera, numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

After graduating from Taos High School, she attended Heights Beauty School in Albuquerque, NM and started her career as a beautician.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandson. She also enjoyed shopping, traveling and going for coffee with her daughters. She enjoyed spending time with her neighbors. Her infectious smile will be dearly missed.

The Valerio Family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Anvoi Hospice, especially her nurse Kendra.

Rosary will be recited on Friday, September 18, 2026 at 9:00am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am, held a San Francisco de Asís Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Taos Memorial Gardens – DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos.
