Carmen Romero Velarde of Ranchos De Taos was born on July 1, 1928. The Lord welcomed her home into His Kingdom on January 28, 2022. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, sister, and friend to many.

Carmen was known and recognized for her amazing adobe work that she and her sons did around Taos and all over the world. She received many awards for her signature fireplaces, retablo’s and handmade traditional hornos.  Her work has been exhibited all over the country. One of her fireplaces and one of her traditional New Mexican ovens are in the Smithsonian’s permanent exhibit; and in the Smithsonian’s 1992 Festival of American Folklife she was recognized for “exceptional contributions to the increase and diffusion of knowledge about cultures and traditions which enrich our nation and the world.”  At the age of 88 was still participating in the annual enjarre at San Francisco De Asis Catholic Church in Ranchos. She has received the Award of Merit in appreciation for her work and the Governor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts. She was named Woman of the Year in 1995 by the town of Taos. She is also included in the book “Remarkable Women of Taos,” published in July 2013 by Nighthawk Press.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Avenicio and Beatrice Romero, her husband Ernesto Velarde, sons, Ernesto Velarde Jr, Trinidad and daughter in law Zandra Velarde, brother, Blas Romero and sisters, Ida Romero, Fabiola Duran and Fannie Bustos.

She is survived by her children, Sarah (Orlando), Juan (Nami), Alex, and Michael (Maria), 13 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, brothers, Julian (Regina) and Alberto Romero, plus many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives. Special thank you to Holy Cross Hospital and the Taos Living Center for your kind care you provided to our beloved Carmen.

Rosary will be recited on Friday February 18, 2022 at 9am followed by the Funeral Mass at 10am at San Francisco de Asís Catholic Church, burial will follow at the Talpa Cemetery.
