Chat Campbell

d. November 18, 2023

Chat Campbell was born in Natick, Massachusetts. He passed November 17th, 2023, peacefully in his home in Arroyo Seco, New Mexico after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Chat was surrounded by his loved ones.

Chat was an entrepreneur at heart as the owner/operator of Campbell Excavation Company in Taos, New Mexico, and other businesses. Chat came to Red River, New Mexico early in the 70’s helping to install a new ski lift at the Red River Ski Area. Chat started the Windsurfing Eagle Nest Company in Eagle Nest, New Mexico in the early eighties with Carol Campbell. They then founded the Columbia River Gorge Windsurf Shop in Hood River, Oregon on the Columbia River as a representative for Big River Windsurfing. Chat at that time would often take various ski patrol and ski instructors with him to Maui in the early spring to windsurf the waters of Hawaii.

Chat loved to ride motorcycles, the sport of golf and downhill skiing. Chat was a Taos Ski Valley Ski Patrolman, and Avalanche Control Assistant Snow Safety Director. Chat helped to start the TSV Avalanche Rescue Dog Program. He would often be found at the St Bernard with his favorite rescue dog Sheila sitting on a chair beside him, with his ski goggles on her head. Chat appreciated the Taos Ski Valley and the joy of the relationships he made in the ski industry. He cherished the outdoors, nature, and animals in all his pursuits.

Chat attended the University of Miami in business administration and forestry. Earlier in his educational background, attended Leelanau Prep School of Glen Arbor, Michigan. Chat is survived by his big brother Sandy Campbell of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and his significant other Sandra Claymore of Taos, New Mexico. Chat was preceded in death by two brothers Denny Campbell and Skip Campbell, who died young of tuberculosis and spinal meningitis, his parents Dorothy Glander Flowers of Naples, Florida and Foster Campbell of Cheshire, Connecticut.

The family of Chat Campbell has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos.  866-657-4019 www.devargastaos.com
