God’s beloved son, Edwin Manuel Mascareñas of Peñasco and Taos, was called home in the early morning hours of October 4, 2026, at 62 years old.
Edwin was a man of faith, family, and service. His relationship with God remained a source of strength throughout his life, carrying him through both joyful and difficult seasons. He was also a proud and decorated veteran who took great pride in serving his country, including his service in Iraq.
Those who knew Edwin knew that he loved deeply. His love for his daughters and granddaughters was immeasurable, and his devotion to his family and friends could be felt in the way he showed up for them. He was always willing to lend a hand, offer his support, or help someone he loved.
A mountain man at heart, Edwin felt most at home in los mońtes. He loved hunting, fishing, and going for wood and he found peace and freedom in the mountains of the norté. He carried with him the values he learned growing up: humility, generosity, faith, hard work, and the importance of taking care of one another.
Edwin also had a lifelong love of sports. A state champion in basketball for the Peñasco Panthers in 1981 and Air Force Basketball Champion in 1983, he understood the dedication, heart, and perseverance it took to compete. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan who proudly called them “America’s Team,” and he rarely missed a game. Even more important to him was supporting the people he loved. Whether he was watching his nephews’ play sports, cheering at his son-in-law’s basketball tournaments, or attending one of his granddaughters’ ninja competitions, Edwin was proud to be there.
Service was woven throughout Edwin’s life. He served his community as a police officer, served his country in the Air Force and Army, and worked for many years at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Following his service in Iraq, Edwin navigated the lasting effects of that service as a disabled veteran. He treasured the time he could spend with the people he loved and enjoyed moving between Taos, Peñasco, and Albuquerque, sharing his love, help, humor, and support wherever he went.
Edwin is survived by his parents, Eloy Mascareñas and Soraida Mascareñas; his daughters, Myriah Mascareñas and Crystal and Raul Sanchez; and his beloved granddaughters, Avaya and Aviana Sanchez.
He is also survived by his siblings and their families: Eloy and Angelica Mascareñas; Gilbert Mascareñas and his children, Donovan and Dante; Dolores and Jose Contreras and their daughter, Bianca Contreras; and Lynda and David Sanchez and their children, Roxanne, Edwin’s goddaughter, David Jr., and Amaris.
Edwin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cornelia and Procopio Mascareñas and Beatrice and Jose Gurule; his baby brother, Brian Mascareñas; and his nephew, Gilbert Mascareñas Jr.
Edwin believed that family was formed not only through blood, but also through love, shared experiences, and the choice to continue showing up for one another. Through the family he shared with Leslie Martin, Edwin became a cherished member of the Martin family. Together, they shared children, grandchildren, holidays, traditions, and many treasured memories. He is also lovingly remembered by Weldon and Yvett Driskell and their children, Jalyssa, Edwin’s goddaughter, Jillian, and Jer; and Rob and Sue Trujillo and their children, Robert and Anakaela. The love and connection they shared with Edwin remained an important part of his life.
Serving the family as pallbearers: Donovan Mascareñas, Raul Sanchez, Robert Trujillo, Jose Contreras, Weldon Driskell and Arnold Mascareñas.
