FRANK E. (DIRK) MURCHISON III

Dirk Murchison lived life on his own terms until the day he died in Taos, NM, on March 30, 2026. A man of many accomplishments, father, husband, attorney extraordinaire, rancher, a man who loved his dogs, loved music, the land and the creatures who lived thereon, his passions were the core of who he was. Inspired and taught by his father, Frank E. Murchison Jr., to work and work hard, he enjoyed his ranch at Guadalupita, NM, and his many friends there and in Taos. Fishing, camping and hunting were his hobbies as an adult, often with his children by his side. On a personal level, Dirk was known by his many friends to be “that guy” who would guide them through a legal problem, always willing to listen and give advice on how to proceed. And because he was “that guy”, people he didn’t know would occasionally approach him with a problem and request help, which he willingly gave to anyone who asked.

Graduating from Texas Tech law school in 1974, Dirk became an outstanding trial lawyer in Lubbock, TX, having tried over 125 cases to a jury as lead counsel with a 98% success rate. Double Board Certified in Civil Trial Law and Personal Injury Trial Law, he was inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Trial Lawyers in1995, his first year of eligibility.

In 2001, he changed his professional focus to Arbitration and Mediation, ultimately mediating over 1600 cases. His ability to bring closure through mediation to those involved in lawsuits was a source of great satisfaction for him. As a longtime honoree of Texas Super Lawyers and Southwest Super Lawyers, he was also named 2012 Texas Lawyer of the Year in Arbitration and Mediation by Best Lawyers in America.

He is survived by his wife and life partner of 32 years, Georganna Robinett, and his children: Amanda Smith, her husband Matthew and their three children, Otis, Oscar, and Ozzie; Fletcher Murchison; Will Murchison and his wife Kenye Kaye; and Max Murchison. A Celebration of Life gathering is planned for a later date.
