Guillermo “Robert” Ortega, age 80, of Penasco, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, surrounded by family. Guillermo was a loving brother, uncle and friend who touched the lives of many throughout his lifetime.
Guillermo attended Job Corps, where he received certifications in arc welding, forestry, and meat cutting. His work took him across many parts of the country, including California, San Antonio, Texas, and New Jersey. Guillermo dedicated over 20 years of service as a firefighter for the Carson National Forest, a role that reflected his strength, courage, and commitment to protecting others.
Throughout his life, Guillermo worked in many trades and traveled widely. He worked on farms in Colorado, in the canneries of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a sheep herder in Wyoming, and as a meat cutter in Utah, among many other jobs. He was known for his hardworking spirit and willingness to go wherever work was needed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernabe Ortega and Aurelia S. Ortega; his brothers Juanito Ortega (stillborn) and Tony Ortega; his sister Marianita Leyba; his nephews Danny Esquibel Jr. and Damian “Bugs” Luna; his brothers-in-law Alvar Lito Leyba and Gilbert Esquibel Sr.: his paternal grandparents Marianita V. Ortega and Antonio Ortega; his maternal grandparents Juan Sandoval and Libraitia Gonzales Sandoval.
He is survived by his loving siblings: Seferino Ortega (his best friend and partner in crime), Precilla Esquibel, Rosalita Castillo, Jose A.B. Ortega, and Nelson Leyba. He is also survived by his special nephew Jamie Leyba, who visited and helped care for him daily. His best friend Tommy Mascarenas along with many nieces, nephews extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory.
Guillermo will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his life of service, and the love he shared with his family and community. He was known for his gentle spirit and positive attitude. Those who knew Guillermo often said he was always happy and carried a smile with him. Many remarked that they had never once seen him angry. His kindness and warm presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Viewing and rosary will be on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 6pm in the Evergreen Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos.
