A Life Well Lived.

We are sad to announce the death of Harry G. Martinez, 83 of Taos New Mexico he passed away on May 13, 2024, after succumbing to his injuries from a fall in late February. Harry was born July 20, 1940, to Emilio and Orcelia (Vargas) Martinez in Colorado. He is survived by his daughter, Valerie P. Martinez Harrison, (Greg) and grandchildren Brett and Jenna Harrison. Harry is survived by his sister Yolanda Martinez Miller (John), son (John) and nieces and nephew. Harry had two other brothers Tony Martinez, Armondo Martinez. Harry had many relatives in Taos including an aunt and many cousins. As a young man Harry moved to Taos with his parents and siblings, where he created fond memories growing up in a small town. Later in life Harry relocated to Oakland California, where he spent most of his adult life. While living in the bay area Harry worked as a Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, with the Service League of San Mateo County. Harry was most proud of his professional accomplishments at the C.A.S.E Program, under the direction of Dr. Richard Hayward. Harry worked with a team of professionals that counseled substance abusers to help turn their lives around. Harry’s eyes would sparkle when, he described the experience of seeing.

“The light come on” in the eyes of a man who finally “got it” that they have a problem with alcohol and/or drugs. Harry believed a person could choose to no longer be a victim, if they are willing to change their thinking and make “healthier choices. “Harry was very proud of the work he completed as a C.A.S.E Counselor until his retirement. Harry relocated to his hometown of Taos New Mexico in 2013, where he lived a quiet life as a retiree with his beloved dog, Girlie. In his spare time, Harry loved gambling and especially the ponies. He often boasted how lucky he was. Harry will be cremated on May 24, 2024, and the family will scatter some of his ashes in New Mexico. The rest will be brought back to the bay area, where he will be laid to rest alongside his mother, Orcelia Vargas in the bay area.
