Manuel Fernandez, 83, a resident of Talpa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 22, 2025. He was born on December 1, 1941, to Jose and Elviria Fernandez in Rodarte, New Mexico, who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his son, Julian, sisters Sofia Fernandez, Rosalina Anglada and Sofia Chacon, brother-in-law Toby Griego, in-laws Eusebio and Rose Griego and great-grandson, Leo Lujan.
He is survived by his loving wife Manuelita Fernandez of 64 years, which he met at the Ranchos theater when they were 13 and 14 years old. They had 7 children, Frank (Sylvia), Mary Ann, Catalina, John (Shemai), Rudy (Shannon), Lisa (Valentine) and Rosie (Alex). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, sister Alice Tapia, brothers Jose and Senovio Fernandez and brothers-in-law, Porfirio, Amadeo and Benito Griego.
Manuel was in the Army National Guard for ten years. He worked in many places until he was hired to work for the CAP program that started the senior citizen, head start and youth programs in Taos County. He went on to work at the Taos Municipal School administration building.
He was known as “Chief” to his sons, to whom he passed on a wealth of knowledge, especially his love of working on cars. He worked hard and taught his children to do the same. He inspired and encouraged all his children to excel in education, join the military, and to pursue their dreams and never give up. He was always there for all their success and failures without judgement.
Manuel devoted his entire life to his wife and family, who he cherished most. He was a rock for his wife, children, siblings, parents and friends. But most of all he had a great faith in God to get him thru his life on earth and carry him to the next, where he is now resting in peace.
