Maryann Garcia, age 61, of Arroyo Seco, passed away peacefully on Jan 14 with family by her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fidel and Elvira Garcia, sister Elaine, and brother-in-law Alonzo Valdez; and is survived by siblings Berlinda (Uvaldo), Gerald (Lina), Jesse (Francella), Ray (Beth), Verna (Steven) and Antonia (Tony) and her dear friend Wanda Wilson (Carl), her beloved cat Sunshine, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and in-laws who all adored and honored her. She was the touchstone of our family.
Maryann lived with a physical disability and the challenges of frequent encounters with the medical system since her birth on January 30, 1964. Her grace, courage and ever-present sense of humor shone out from the difficult circumstances that never slowed her down in her enjoyment of life. She treasured her family and friends and was a special figure in the lives of the younger generation, providing nurturing and connection as they grew to adulthood.
Maryann loved her animals and they loved her back. She had the tenderest heart matched by a sharp wit and the capacity to fight for her rights when it was called for. She made the principled decision to enter hospice care on Christmas Day and explained her decision to us with so much gentleness, gratitude, respect, and integrity. The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to the medical and nursing staff at Holy Cross Hospital and Mountain Home Health Care who were wonderful, caring and respectful human beings, as well as the Hermanos of Arroyo Seco who came to pray with her, Father Gabriel who provided her last rites, and Ancianos that provided the delicious meals on wheels.
Rosary will be recited on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at 9:00am, Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00am held at Holy Trinity Parish in Arroyo Seco, burial will follow at the Arroyo Seco Cemetery.
The family of Maryann Garcia has entrusted the care of their loved one to the caring staff of DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos. 866-657-4019 www.devargastaos.com
