Mary Manhart

d. December 21, 2023

Mary passed away peacefully early on the morning of Thursday, December 21st. She is survived by her husband Joe Patrick Manhart (Pat) and daughters Keiki, Hilary and Kristin, as well as seven grandchildren. Harley was born and raised in Honolulu Hawaii, where her mother was the first executive director of the Arts Academy in Honolulu. Harley attended Hanahau’oli Preschool and went on to Punahou School. After earning a degree in political science at Smith College, she moved to New York City, where she was a researcher for Edward R. Murrow at CBS. While living in New York she studied ceramics, a pursuit she continued after moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma. She met Pat through friends and they were soon married and living in his home town of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Education – especially arts education – was Harley’s calling. She worked as the head of education at Philbrook Museum of Art before becoming a founding member and the first headmistress of Tulsa’s Undercroft Montessori School. Later, she served as the Director of the Lincoln Center Institute in Tulsa, where she trained people to teach the arts in schools. She finished her career as the Director of the Arts & Humanities Council in Tulsa, a position she held for 15 years. In retirement Harley and Pat traveled often. Harley furthered her lifelong hobby of large format landscape photography, later transitioning into printmaking. She enjoyed hiking, fly fishing, foraging for mushrooms, book clubs, and wine tasting clubs. She spent countless hours doing art projects with her grandchildren and teaching them how to cook and bake. The family of Mary Manhart has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos. www.devargastaos.com 1-866-657-4019
