Rita M. Stein was born February 29, 1936 in Kenosha, WI to Edward & Margaret Althoff and passed away peacefully April 26, 2026.

After her graduation from high school, Rita got her nursing degree, married Ronald Stein, and had a daughter Linda and a son William “Billy”. In 1961 she and her family moved to Tucson, AZ where she raised her children. Rita had a deep passion for animals and cared for many dogs and horses. Rita began her nursing career when her children were older.

She and her family moved to Taos in 1977, Rita began working at Holy Cross Hospital and did so for 40 years until the age of 80. She was loved by her patients and co-workers alike. She was a close companion of Archie Espinoza, until his passing in 2016. Another good friend of Rita was Kathy Cordova, along with many others.

Rita loved animals and had many pets during her life. She was a longtime member of ASPCA and PETA. She donated to other causes as well. She was happy doing most anything and enjoyed cooking, baking, she was famous for her apple pies and chocolate chip cookies, she made jam and dried fruit. Often, she would gift her treats to friends and co-workers. Rita enjoyed gardening, taking a drive, having a cocktail and a good game of euchre. She was crazy about horse racing and the Denver Broncos, she was able to attend several games with her son.

She was known and loved by many, she was a wonderful mother, friend and nurse. She never hesitated to answer the phone no matter what time it was. Her nature was sweet, loving, kind, thoughtful and very giving. She was easy-going and made everyone feel welcome and at ease with her warmth. In recent days her daughter Linda has encountered numerous people who have known and loved Rita, giving her high compliments.

Rita is preceded in death by her parents Edward and Margaret Althoff; her brother Ronald Stein; and many other relatives.

A private funeral service will take place at a later date.
