Ronald Karsin

d. August 4, 2025

With deep sadness, we share that Ronald Karsin joined the ancestors on August 4, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in Los Angeles in 1945, Ron grew up in a family of Jewish Ukrainian immigrants. Often the smartest person in the room, Ron excelled at academics, sports, violin, and Hebrew school. He served as concertmaster in the orchestra at Beverly Hills High School, where he graduated in 1961.

A proud Trojan, Ron graduated from the University of Southern California in 1965 and earned his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School in 1969. Ron returned to Los Angeles to specialize in ophthalmology, where he married his wife Lynne and started a family. He practiced medicine as an eye surgeon with a compassionate heart for healing people's vision. As a resident at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Ron spearheaded an eye surgery clinic in Mexicali to serve underprivileged patients.

A dedicated father and family man, Ron coached sports for both of his children and was always an involved and supportive parent. When his children were in high school, the family traveled to the Brazilian Amazon on a surgical eye expedition, where Ron and two other doctors performed 104 cataract operations in the remote jungle town of Parintins.

While he loved his home and garden in Encino, Ron was an avid skier drawn to the Southwest. He and Lynne moved to Taos, New Mexico, in 1999, where Ron built a home in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Though he and Lynne later divorced, Ron spent his final 25 years skiing, hiking, playing pickleball, forest bathing, communing with nature, and embracing the spirit of Taos.

Kind, generous, soulful, honest, wise, and adventurous, Ron lived his life on his own terms. He died unexpectedly and peacefully at home in the company of his son. Preceded in death by his parents, Ron is survived by his beloved children, who adored him and will miss him tremendously, forever grateful for his loving guidance.

To honor Ron's memory, please consider making a donation in his name to the American Civil Liberties Union (aclu.org) and/or performing an act of kindness. There will be no service.

The family of Ronald Karsin has entrusted the care of their loved one to the caring staff of DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos. 866-657-4019 www.devargastaos.com
