Sherman "Butch" Reese Holmes

Sherman Reese Holmes, fondly known as Butch, of Tucson, Arizona, peacefully went home, surrounded by family on Sunday August 9. He was 75 years old.

Born and raised in Taos, New Mexico, he is proceeded in death by his mother and father, Hacel Reese and Edna Mae (Linebarger) Holmes and his sisters, Wilma Jean (Rudolph “Doc”) and Gloria Arlean.

Butch is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lorra Lee (Carey) four children, Latisha Lee (Charles) Williams, Shawn Denice (Billy) Martinez, Sherman Reese Jr (Sarah), Jason Matthew and eight beautiful grandchildren; as well as many extended family including his sister and brother-in law & many many nieces, nephews and great-nieces & nephews.

Butch was the youngest of three children. He spent the entirety of his young adult life in Taos, New Mexico, proud graduate of Taos High (1969), he went on to attend Eastern New Mexico University. He met his wife Lorra in high school during their senior year. He played football and she was Rodeo de Taos Queen, so of course, it was love at first sight. They were married just one year later (1970) in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. 56 years later the rest is history.

Butch’s spiritual nature, contagiously humorous personality, and cheerful demeanor drew people to him, and he made many close friends along the way. His ability to see the good in everyone made him an easy person to love. He never met anyone he didn’t like or that didn’t like him. He will be dearly missed here on earth as he begins his joyous family reunion beyond the veil.

Services in Tucson will be held on Monday August 17, 2026 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints West Stake Center, 3530 W Magee Rd. Tucson, AZ 85741. Viewing will be at 9:30-10:30am with a Celebration of Life at 11am.  Burial will be on Wednesday August 19, 2026 at 9am at the Sierra Vista Cemetery in Taos NM.
